President Ramchandra Paudel has appointed Bishowambhar Prasad Shrestha as the Chief Justice.
Paudel will administer the oath of office to Shrestha on Tuesday evening after the Parliamentary Hearing Committee endorsed him as head of the apex court earlier on Monday morning, according to Shailaja Regmi Bhattarai, spokesperson of the Office of the President.
Lawmaker Pashupati Shumsher Rana, who chaired the hearing committee as the senior-most member of the committee in age, announced at the meeting that Shrestha was unanimously endorsed by the committee as the Chief Justice.
“Shrestha, who was recommended to the Chief Justice post by the Constitutional Council, has been unanimously endorsed by this meeting,” Rana announced at the meeting. “The committee took the decision on the basis of his ability and experience.”
Three complaints had been filed at the committee secretariat against Shrestha, which were all discussed during Monday’s meeting.
Shrestha, presenting his visions and plans of efficiently leading the top court, pledged to work towards eradicating the influence of middlemen in court procedures.
The Constitutional Council had recommended the name of Shrestha, who is senior most among the Supreme Court justices, to the post earlier this month.
He will lead the apex court for 14 months.
