One dead, five missing after landslide washes away house in Makawanpur

A woman died and five others are missing after a landslide swept away their house in Bagmati Rural Municipality-5 of Makawanpur district on Monday night.
The mudslide triggered by a heavy downpour buried the house of one Akkal Bahadur Syangtan. Akkal Bahadur, his wife Shanti Maya, son-in-law Jeevan Pahari, daughter Sheela Syangtan, two grandchildren and house guest Pasang Ghising were buried in the landslide.
Locals had rescued Shanti Maya from the landslide debris and rushed her to a nearby health post for treatment. But she died while undergoing treatment, said Sarkesh Ghalan, chair of the rural municipality.
Meanwhile, Ghising, 19, was also rescued alive on Tuesday afternoon. He was found on the bank of the Bagmati River some four kilometres downstream from the landslide site.
According to Sher Bahadur Majhi, a local, Ghising has sustained multiple injuries but is in stable condition.
“He is able to speak and has been sent to the health post for treatment,” said Majhi.
The rain-swollen Bagmati River has also inundated six houses in ward no 4 of the rural municipality, said police.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Tek Bahadur Karki of the District Police Office informed that the residents of the house and valuables have been shifted to a safer location.
In Sindhuli, a landslide triggered by continuous rains buried the house of one Uttam Nepali in Majhindamar of Kamalamai Municipality on Tuesday.
Nepali’s wife Samjhana, mother-in-law Setmaya and brother Rabi managed to escape the disaster unhurt and are taking shelter at the neighbour’s house, ward chairman Naresh Gole informed.
Police informed that landslides triggered by incessant rains have also obstructed vehicular movement along several road sections of the BP Highway, Madan Bhandari Highway and Mid-Hills Highway.
A landslide has blocked the Nepalthok-Dhulikhel section of the BP highway at Mangaltar in Kavrepalanchowk district. Likewise, a flooded Kaldhunga River along the same section has damaged the road.
Likewise, the Madan Bhandari Highway remains obstructed due to landslides at various places along the Marin-Hariharpurgadi road section.
Likewise, landslides at Akkarebhir have blocked the Mid-Hill Highway.
Similarly, the water level in the Kamala River in Sindhuli district has exceeded the danger level.
The District Administration Office, Sindhuli has urged flood-prone settlements downstream to take necessary precautions.
