One person was killed after a truck and a motorcycle collided in Santpur Dostiya Chowk of Phatuwa Bijayapur Municipality on Friday.

Thirty-five-year-old Umesh Yadav died on the spot after a truck, travelling towards Nijgadh, crashed into the motorcycle he was riding.

Agitated locals had physically assaulted truck driver Mukund Pokharel, accusing him of murdering Yadav by purposely reversing the vehicle.

A clash ensued between police personnel and protesters after the former tried to protect the accused from being assaulted. Police fired four rounds of bullets into the air to control the situation.

Pokharel, who was injured after the incident, was taken to the Birgunj Hospital for treatment.

The bereaved family members had obstructed traffic in the area, demanding compensation be given and strict action be taken against the accused.

Demonstrations were called off after an agreement was reached following negotiations with the Chief District Officer Dharmendra Kumar Mishra and District Police Chief Superintendent of Police Mahendra Shrestha.
